instead of trying to tell yourself these:
“don’t think about it”
“there’s nothing you can do about it”
(these are a few of the worst things to say to someone experiencing anxiety – in case you say this to anyone, stop it)
do this instead: directed thinking.
directed thinking is engaging in deliberate, purposeful, logical and specific flow of thoughts.
during anxiety, most of the time we engage in free flow thinking which is usually all over and may cause spiraling deeper into anxiety because we keep going round and round in circles.
so walk yourself through..
the things you feel anxious about.
why you feel so.
what do you need.
what you can actually do about it.
personally, anxiety is one of my frequent visitors (next to anger). coincidentally (or not), i also work through it with quite a few of my clients.
i have to say, not all anxiety can be self mediated. sometimes you need someone to just walk through and break it down with/for you or guide you through it.
