5 steps on how to bust our own beliefs

  • by

About 10 days ago, I recorded and posted my first video. Prior to that, I have been declaring, for at least 6 months, that I will produce videos and post them. During that 6 months, I have amazing reason why I did not and should not post.

I must have a script if not I do not know what to say. But having a script is unnatural and I do not want that. I do not have the equipment to record. I need a good camera, maybe a mic, maybe a professional videographer. I do not want to spend that money. I also may need an editor? I must dress up and also put on makeup. (This is ridiculous, I know.)

Before that, it was writing. I had the belief that I make a lot of mistakes.. grammar and all. Also, who would want to read what I write?

Sounds typical?

We all have something that we want to do but there are so many reasons why we should not, could not.. or just not do it. Our reasons may be similar, or it may differ. But many times it is just bullshit stories that we tell ourselves.

Over the years, I have fallen in love with busting my own beliefs and I have gathered it in 5 steps for any of you who like to do the same.

1. Get clear

Get clear on why we do what we want to do. When I got clear I wanted to share, to inspire, to empower, my English suddenly did not matter anymore. I was clear I am not here to teach English or teach how to make a professional video. Then if so, why gives a shit about the anal grammar nazi who is going to get pissed by the way I write? Or the someone who couldn't stand the quality of the video? I mean, if I convey what I want to convey, that's the whole point, no?

So ask.. why? Why write, why dance, why sing, why teach, WHY?

2. Go deep

My favourite: go deep, go deeper. Some of the reasons are logical, some not.. It is easy to buy into those logical ones. But keep going deeper. Is that really the reason why you should not or could not do it?

It was when I went deep that I realised those beliefs are all cover up. What I found out was, underneath all those narratives, what I am most afraid of is putting myself out there and let people have a chance to judge. When we get to the bottom then we can spend our energy on handling that instead of the amazing stories our mind is capable of making up, one after another. I could imagine me getting the best equipment and script yet still not recording a video. Because by then, my mind would make up another nice story to not do it. But because I got to the core, which is fear of judgment, then I get to move to the next one, choice.

3. Choices

When we are aware of the truth, we get to make choices. Which do I want? Do I want to fulfill my “why”, do I want to act on my fear, do I want to remain status quo? Which do I want?

This is simple yet powerful. Once we make a choice, it comes with the willingness to see possibilities and do something.

4. Collect evidence (to be wrong)

We love to be right and we are constantly collecting evidence to prove that we are right whether we are conscious about it a not. But since we want to bust our beliefs, then duh. Another of my faviourite: We collect evidence to be wrong. I started looking for flaws in videos of famous coaches, speakers, etc. Of course, there are people who judge them. But are there more people who judge them or are there more people that benefited from it? I even spotted spelling errors in some sites.

But the ultimate best way, prove it ourselves. Go out there, write, dance, sing.. and let the feedback prove us wrong.

5. Let the universe kick our ass

13 days ago, I took a flight to the magical land, Bali. They told me magic happens here. And it did for me. 3 days into the trip and I have got soooooo much to write and journal about. But I was immersed in laziness. In order to retain my learning and experiences, I decided to do video blog and recorded a video. Then I got stuck for my 2nd video and suddenly I was not lazy to journal. So I ended up recording videos for reading.

Universe has a way to kick our asses – good or bad, depends on what we send out. So do the work for the first 4 points, and let the universe conspire and kick your ass to make it happen. When we breathe, eat, shit, and think what we want.. the universe will conspire and make it happen. #LawOfAttraction. But as long as we have doubts, beliefs, questions that are louder than what we want, the universe is stupid this way, it picks that up instead. Be careful what we “wish” for.

Lastly, GET SHIT DONE.

Just get our ass out and do it. No point doing all the steps and not this, really. I am not including the last one as a step because it's just duh. But I will be amazed if someone did all 5 steps and not get shit done.

Have fun busting!
